Tree Diseases Worth Knowing Out Here
On acreage with old oaks, elms and fruit trees, disease is often the first thing that goes wrong. A diagnosis isn’t always a death sentence: some problems clear up on their own, and many can be managed if they’re caught early. These are the ones we look for most:
- Oak wilt: leaves on an oak turn brown, wilt and drop much faster than normal fall color.
- Anthracnose: dark blotches on maple, oak and sycamore leaves after a cool, wet spring. It often clears up once the weather warms.
- Dutch elm disease: spread by bark beetles. An American elm suddenly wilts and yellows.
- Fire blight: crabapple and pear blossoms and branches look scorched, as if they’d been burned.
- Armillaria root rot: a fungus that starts in wet, packed soil and rots the roots from below.
If a tree on your place is showing any of these, our arborist can tell you whether it can be managed or needs to come down.
“Trufast did a great job of cutting down our tree and grinding out the stump. They came within a day or two, were very professional and completed the job in a very satisfactory manner. We appreciate their service and will recommend them to friends. We used Trufast for a second time. This time we had them take down a tree at our rental house and grind out the stump. Again we weren’t disappointed. Good job, reasonable price. Personable employees.”
Farther from Springfield, not off the schedule.
Trufast is based in Springfield, about 35 minutes up the road from Walnut Grove. Walnut Grove is one of the 17 southwest Missouri communities we cover, and a regular part of our route even though it sits outside our core service area. We schedule the work as capacity allows.
Trufast stays owner-operated and holds every job to the same standard, and our ISA Certified Arborist is on staff for the calls where a trained eye matters more than a chainsaw.

Walnut Grove is a smaller, more rural stop than most of the towns we cover — worth a quick look at what actually makes it different.
A town named for its own trees
Walnut Grove was platted in 1859 and named for the groves of wild black walnut trees that grew near the original townsite — before that, the settlement went by the considerably less flattering name Possum Trot. Black walnut is a slow-growing, valuable hardwood, and it’s still a common tree on older properties in this part of Greene County. It’s also a species that rewards careful, selective pruning over aggressive cutting — a mature walnut is worth protecting, not just trimming down to a manageable size.

Working land, not subdivision lots
Walnut Grove is an agricultural community, and the properties we see out this way tend to look different from a typical in-town Springfield lot: bigger acreages, established fence-line trees and windbreaks, and older shade trees that were often planted well before anyone thought about drainage easements or property lines. That usually means fewer trees crowded up against a structure, but the trees that are there tend to be bigger and older — which changes the call between trimming and removal more than it does on a smaller in-town lot.
Technically Springfield metro, but its own community
Walnut Grove counts as part of the Springfield metropolitan area on a census map, but it doesn’t feel like a suburb — it’s a small, close-knit farming town of a few hundred people with its own identity. That matters for how we approach a job here: it’s not a cookie-cutter subdivision call, it’s usually a property where the owner knows every tree on it and wants a plan that respects that, not a generic trim-and-go.
Why technique and timing both matter
How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.
What actually moves the estimate
All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.
