Cabling and Bracing: When your tree just needs a little support
Trees are a very valuable part of your property and, depending on the type of tree, may also have a lot of happy memories that grow into its spreading branches. Maybe not if it's a black walnut or a sweetgum dropping memorable packages every Fall.
Cabling and bracing are there to support a tree that is overall healthy but may have a weak structural setup in a certain area. Techniques used to strengthen such a situation are tailored to what you are trying to accomplish.
- Cabling uses flexible, high-strength cables installed high in the canopy to limit how far heavy limbs can swing, and spreads the load on a stem to the rest of the tree.
- Bracing uses rigid threaded rods installed through a weak point, such as a bark-inclusive, V-shaped crotch or a split trunk, to hold it together and stabilize it. The point is to reduce the amount of movement at the point of weakness.
While they are not a guarantee to fix the situation, and they should not be used in a situation where failure would mean risk to life and property, we have seen some very good outcomes from this solution. However, it is possible to do these implementations wrong, which can actually provide a false sense of safety and make the tree weaker instead of stronger.

Nixa's rapid growth has caused it to become the largest city in Christian County over the last couple decades. That growth has caused a noticeable increase in demand for tree work as the city has grown into the thick forests surrounding the Nixa area. A bit more about the town below.
The fastest-growing city in Christian County
Nixa’s population has more than doubled since 2000, making it the largest city in Christian County and the second-largest in the greater Springfield area. Nixa's family- and faith-oriented community and fantastic schools have attracted families from all over the United States. Newer construction in Nixa subdivisions means more young, recently-planted trees that need early structural pruning, but there are plenty of older, established properties to be found.

Sucker Days and small-town roots
Nixa still throws Sucker Days every year, a festival that’s been running since 1957, when a local barber noticed the town's boys skipping school to go fishing for suckerfish along nearby creeks. How exactly this grew into a town festival is probably a matter of legend at this point. But you can still eat sucker fish at the festival to this day. Twenty minutes and across the county line
Nixa sits just over the Christian County line from Springfield, a 20 minute drive from where our trucks park. It doesn’t change how we schedule or price a job — Nixa runs on the same timeline as the rest of our core service area — but it does mean crossing from Greene County’s rockier, oak-hickory ground into slightly different terrain by the time you’re in town.
The case for trimming on a regular schedule
To ensure your trees are properly cared for, we recommend having them pruned once a year when they are young and trimmed at least once every two years when they are older. Not only do healthy, cleaned-up trees look better in your yard, but they also help increase the overall value of your home and property! On the other hand, failing to maintain the trees on your property puts you, your home, and the homes of those around you at risk of damage during wind and ice storms.
Why technique and timing both matter
How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.
What rough mulching is
Chipping is the process of turning your trimmed tree branches into healthy, organic, and non-chemically treated mulch using smaller, pull-behind wood-masticating machines. The end result is wood chips, which are rougher than the finer mulch that you can buy in bags.
Clearing rotten or weak branches
Over time because of wind, storms, and branches dying, a tree develops a significant amount of dead wood. Dead branches are weaker and can create a safety threat. If you have dead branches in your trees, and especially if they are hanging (aka widow makers) we will take care of them safely.
What goes into an estimate
All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.
