How We Trim

No spikes on trims

Spikes wound the inner-growth layers of the tree and expose it to disease. Over time, they leave scars that aren't ideal aesthetically too. Spikes only make sense for a tree that is being removed, not for one we want to stay healthy and beautiful. When a Mount Vernon property doesn't give our bucket truck a clean angle, our crew is well-trained in SRT or DRT methodologies.

A branch that could hit something gets lowered instead of dropped

Our work is physics-heavy work. When branches can't be dropped because of the canopy below or even more importantly, your home, we use ropes, pulleys, and friction devices to safely lower the branches. If you get a chance to stop and watch the crew (at a safe distance!) the work they do is fascinating.

Quality-focused in every aspect

Customer satisfaction is so important because it means we did a good job. We want to leave the job site knowing that we’re leaving behind excellent work. For us, professionalism means that from the first time a customer reaches out to us to the sign-off and beyond, the process has been relatively smooth, understandable, and enjoyable.

The cleanup

As a default, the job isn't finished until the yard is cleared and everything is hauled off. It's heavy work we do, so it's hard to leave it perfect, but we do try to leave it better than how we found it. What you can expect is all the brush hauled off, and then the twigs and leaves raked up behind it.
Our process

How We Remove

Tree removals have a different goal

Since the goal of a tree removal is not the continued health of the tree, the focus becomes how to most efficiently remove the tree and all the material from your property with the minimal amount of upheaval. In the most difficult of situations, that means avoiding service lines, fences, sheds, and even houses.

Counting the costs for tree removal

You can rest easy knowing that every estimate takes into account all the information with the intention of providing a fair and honest price for your job. What that means is that we are taking into account the factors that most move the price:
  • The size and location of the trees
  • How many obstacles we are working around
  • Tools and equipment needed to effectively finish the job

Equipment necessary for a job well done

Mount Vernon’s residential lots don’t leave much margin for error. We use a variety of equipment, from smaller bucket trucks that can get into a tight spot to cranes that help us remove that tree in an impossible spot.

Nothing left behind

Our default approach is to remove everything, including the wood, the brush, and all the debris. Of course, if you're interested in firewood, you can even save a little bit by requesting to keep the wood. Once all that's out of the way, then you get to decide whether you want the stump ground down right away, which is the most cost-effective way to approach it. We’ll fill the hole left with soil or chips on request.

Big Old Trees in Older Neighborhoods

Mount Vernon's older streets near the square have some of the biggest shade trees we work on: oaks and maples that went in when the houses were new and are now taller than the roofline. A tree like that is worth a lot. It cools the house, it's part of what makes the street look the way it does, and you can't replace it in your lifetime.

It's also a lot of weight hanging over a house, so the question we get most is whether it's still safe to keep. Some warning signs are worth a call:

  • Dead wood in the top of the crown, more of it each year.
  • A cavity, a seam or a crack running down the trunk.
  • Mushrooms at the base or on the trunk, which usually means decay inside.
  • Roots cut or paved over, often from a newer driveway, addition or sewer line.

None of those automatically means the tree has to come down. Often the right answer is taking out the dead wood, reducing the weight over the house, or adding a cable to support a weak fork. Our certified arborist can look at it and tell you honestly whether it's a tree to keep investing in or one that's become a risk.

A verified review from across our service area — NOT a Mount Vernon job

“We had a HUGE oak tree in our back yard that had to be removed. It was hard to get to (between lots), near power lines, over the house, had access issues due to neighbors... you name it, this tree had it. These guys came out and were like a well-oiled machine. They climbed the tree and dropped huge pieces of tree safely, efficiently, and quickly. They were able to remove it in two days, including clean up! They were friendly, responsive, and honestly the whole process was easy. They left my yard looking very nice and even. The price was very reasonable, especially in comparison to other companies in town. I highly recommend this company for your tree removal needs.”

Not Actually on a Mountain

Mount Vernon has a couple of real distinguishing features worth knowing, beyond just being a 45-minute drive from Springfield.

Named after Washington’s home, not a hill

Despite the name, Mount Vernon isn’t sitting on top of a mountain — it was platted in 1845 and named after George Washington’s Virginia estate, not any local high ground. The terrain itself is typical rolling Ozark country: enough grade change on some lots that the access and rigging plan matters as much as the tree itself.

Halfway between two cities

Mount Vernon sits almost exactly halfway between Springfield and Joplin along I-44, and close to the geographic center of Lawrence County — part of why it was picked as the county seat back in 1845. That corridor location means it’s not a special trip out to the edge of nowhere; it’s a stop directly along one of the main routes we already run.

Mining and cattle country

Lawrence County’s early economy was built on lead and zinc mining and later on cattle farming, and a lot of the land around Mount Vernon is still working pasture today. Properties out this way often mix open pasture with fence-line and windbreak trees rather than dense residential canopy — which changes what “typical” tree work looks like compared to an in-town Springfield yard.

Why technique and timing both matter

How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.

On hedge and shrub trimming

Pruning trees and hedges is a service we offer that generates a pleasant environment. We’ve seen how houses with well-maintained lawns tend to attract positive attention from the community. We are the people who can deliver you that quality service that will have all your neighbors and family impressed.

What actually moves the estimate

All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.

Questions

Tree service in Mount Vernon, answered.

Do you serve Mount Vernon, MO?
Yes — Mount Vernon is about 45 minutes from our Springfield base. We take jobs there as capacity allows, and the office confirms the details on the call, before anything is booked.
Do you charge extra to come out to Mount Vernon?
Sometimes. Depending on our estimating schedule, an on-site estimate this far out can carry a small trip fee. When our estimator already has work nearby, there often isn't one. Either way, the office tells you on the call, before anything is booked.
Is Trufast actually insured, or is that just a badge?
We carry a $5M liability tower ($1M general liability + $4M umbrella), plus commercial auto and workers’ comp — the coverage that protects the homeowner, not just us. We’ll share certificates before work starts, Mount Vernon jobs included.
Do you have a certified arborist on staff?
Yes. Luke Smith has guided our tree care since the company started in 2017, and he has been an ISA Certified Arborist since 2021.
Do you remove dead or rotten branches?
Yes — dead and rotten branches are exactly what we’re looking for during an estimate walk-through. They’re a safety risk on their own, and rot can spread into otherwise-healthy wood if it’s left alone, so we’ll flag them whether or not that’s the reason you called.
