Billings Tree Care, High Ground, Honest Answers

Billings is one of our longer drives, and we're glad to make it. Most people don't hire a tree service very often, so we take the time to explain what we see and what we'd recommend, and the decision stays yours.

Our process

How We Trim

No spikes on trims

Spikes wound the inner-growth layers of the tree and expose it to disease. Over time, they leave scars that aren't ideal aesthetically too. Spikes only make sense for a tree that is being removed, not for one we want to stay healthy and beautiful. When a Billings property doesn't give our bucket truck a clean angle, our crew is well-trained in SRT or DRT methodologies.

A branch that could hit something gets lowered instead of dropped

Our work is physics-heavy work. When branches can't be dropped because of the canopy below or even more importantly, your home, we use ropes, pulleys, and friction devices to safely lower the branches. If you get a chance to stop and watch the crew (at a safe distance!) the work they do is fascinating.

Quality-focused in every aspect

Customer satisfaction is so important because it means we did a good job. We want to leave the job site knowing that we’re leaving behind excellent work. For us, professionalism means that from the first time a customer reaches out to us to the sign-off and beyond, the process has been relatively smooth, understandable, and enjoyable.

The cleanup

As a default, the job isn't finished until the yard is cleared and everything is hauled off. It's heavy work we do, so it's hard to leave it perfect, but we do try to leave it better than how we found it. What you can expect is all the brush hauled off, and then the twigs and leaves raked up behind it.

How We Remove

Tree removals have a different goal

Since the goal of a tree removal is not the continued health of the tree, the focus becomes how to most efficiently remove the tree and all the material from your property with the minimal amount of upheaval. In the most difficult of situations, that means avoiding service lines, fences, sheds, and even houses.

Counting the costs for tree removal

You can rest easy knowing that every estimate takes into account all the information with the intention of providing a fair and honest price for your job. What that means is that we are taking into account the factors that most move the price:
  • The size and location of the trees
  • How many obstacles we are working around
  • Tools and equipment needed to effectively finish the job

Equipment necessary for a job well done

Billings’s residential lots don’t leave much margin for error. We use a variety of equipment, from smaller bucket trucks that can get into a tight spot to cranes that help us remove that tree in an impossible spot.

Nothing left behind

Our default approach is to remove everything, including the wood, the brush, and all the debris. Of course, if you're interested in firewood, you can even save a little bit by requesting to keep the wood. Once all that's out of the way, then you get to decide whether you want the stump ground down right away, which is the most cost-effective way to approach it. We’ll fill the hole left with soil or chips on request.

Should You Water Your Trees?

In a dry Missouri summer, trees get by, but they don’t thrive. If you have the time, watering during a dry spell is one of the best things you can do for them.

  • Water in the early morning or late evening. In full sun, a large share of the water can evaporate before it reaches the roots.
  • Check the soil, not the calendar. Dig down about two inches with a trowel. If it’s dry there, the tree needs water. You want moist soil, not soggy soil, because too much water can drown the roots.
  • A rough amount: about 10 gallons for each inch of trunk diameter. Don’t worry about being exact; a reasonable guess is fine.

Newly planted trees and trees that have been stressed by construction or storm damage benefit the most.

High Ground, More Wind to Plan Around

Billings sits higher than a lot of the surrounding Ozarks terrain, and that changes what tends to go wrong with a tree out there. A bit more about the area below.

Higher ground, more wind exposure

Billings sits at an average elevation of around 1,358 feet — noticeably higher than a lot of the surrounding Ozarks terrain, including much of Springfield. Trees on open, elevated ground take more direct wind load than the same species tucked into a sheltered hollow or valley, which is part of why storm-damage checks, cabling, and structural bracing tend to come up more often on ridge and hilltop properties than on low ground.

Farm-edge lots next to in-town lots

Christian County towns like Billings still carry a real mix of property types — larger rural and acreage parcels running right up against tighter, in-town residential lots. That range changes how a job gets planned: an old fence-row tree or windbreak line on a few acres needs different equipment access and drop-zone planning than a shade tree squeezed between a house and a property line downtown.

Inside the metro, still small-town scale

Billings technically falls inside the Springfield metropolitan statistical area, but it’s still a town of a little over a thousand people. In practice that means estimates and scheduling work more like a small-town visit than a stop on a big subdivision route — one property, one conversation, not a cookie-cutter walkthrough.

Why technique and timing both matter

How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.

What actually moves the estimate

All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.

Questions

Tree service in Billings, answered.

Do you come out to Billings for estimates?
Yes — Billings is about 45 minutes from our Springfield base. We schedule these jobs as capacity allows, and the office confirms the details on the call, before anything is booked.
Do you charge extra to come out to Billings?
Sometimes. Depending on our estimating schedule, an on-site estimate this far out can carry a small trip fee. When our estimator already has work nearby, there often isn't one. Either way, the office tells you on the call, before anything is booked.
Are you insured if something goes wrong on my property?
Yes. Trufast carries a $5M liability tower ($1M general liability + $4M umbrella), plus commercial auto and workers’ compensation — the coverage that protects you, the homeowner, not just us. Certificates of insurance will be provided.
How much does tree trimming cost?
Every tree is different — size, species, location, and access all affect price. We say that pricing starts in the low hundreds and goes into the thousands, but we know that isn't very helpful. And this is exactly why we give an on-site estimate before any work starts.
