When Is the Best Time to Prune?
Timing matters almost as much as the cuts themselves.
- Most shade trees: late winter, while the tree is dormant. Without leaves it’s easier to see the structure, the tree heals quickly once spring growth starts, and fewer pests and diseases are active.
- Oaks: avoid pruning in spring and early summer, roughly April through July. That’s when the beetles that spread oak wilt are active, and fresh cuts attract them.
- Evergreens: can be pruned most of the year.
- Dead, broken or hanging limbs: remove them whenever you find them. Safety doesn’t wait for the season.
How often depends on the tree. Young trees benefit from light shaping every year or two, which sets up a strong structure early. Mature shade trees usually need attention every few years, sooner if limbs are over the roof, a driveway or a power line.

A courthouse-square town with old growth to match
Marshfield was laid out in 1856 and has been the Webster County seat ever since — the kind of town where the courthouse square, ringed with historic brick buildings, is still the center of things (it’s also home to a quarter-scale replica of the Hubble Space Telescope, honoring astronomer Edwin Hubble, who was born in Marshfield). Towns with this kind of continuous history tend to come with correspondingly old trees — mature shade trees around century-old homesteads need a different read than a five-year-old subdivision maple.

The highest point on Route 66
Marshfield sits at roughly 1,493 feet — the highest elevation of any town on Route 66 east of the Rocky Mountains. Higher, more exposed ground is a real factor when we’re assessing storm risk on a tree with dead wood or weak branch structure — it’s one of the things an arborist actually weighs on-site, not just species or size.
Dairy and livestock country
Marshfield grew up after the railroad arrived as a dairy, poultry, and livestock hub, and a lot of the land around town is still working farm ground today. That mix of in-town lots and surrounding farmland means we see everything from tight residential trims to open-field windbreak and fence-line work in the same service area.

Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.

All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.
