How We Trim

No spikes on trims

Spikes wound the inner-growth layers of the tree and expose it to disease. Over time, they leave scars that aren't ideal aesthetically too. Spikes only make sense for a tree that is being removed, not for one we want to stay healthy and beautiful. When a Bolivar property doesn't give our bucket truck a clean angle, our crew is well-trained in SRT or DRT methodologies.

A branch that could hit something gets lowered instead of dropped

Our work is physics-heavy work. When branches can't be dropped because of the canopy below or even more importantly, your home, we use ropes, pulleys, and friction devices to safely lower the branches. If you get a chance to stop and watch the crew (at a safe distance!) the work they do is fascinating.

Quality-focused in every aspect

Customer satisfaction is so important because it means we did a good job. We want to leave the job site knowing that we’re leaving behind excellent work. For us, professionalism means that from the first time a customer reaches out to us to the sign-off and beyond, the process has been relatively smooth, understandable, and enjoyable.

The cleanup

As a default, the job isn't finished until the yard is cleared and everything is hauled off. It's heavy work we do, so it's hard to leave it perfect, but we do try to leave it better than how we found it. What you can expect is all the brush hauled off, and then the twigs and leaves raked up behind it.

How We Remove

Tree removals have a different goal

Since the goal of a tree removal is not the continued health of the tree, the focus becomes how to most efficiently remove the tree and all the material from your property with the minimal amount of upheaval. In the most difficult of situations, that means avoiding service lines, fences, sheds, and even houses.

Counting the costs for tree removal

You can rest easy knowing that every estimate takes into account all the information with the intention of providing a fair and honest price for your job. What that means is that we are taking into account the factors that most move the price:
  • The size and location of the trees
  • How many obstacles we are working around
  • Tools and equipment needed to effectively finish the job

Equipment necessary for a job well done

Bolivar’s residential lots don’t leave much margin for error. We use a variety of equipment, from smaller bucket trucks that can get into a tight spot to cranes that help us remove that tree in an impossible spot.

Nothing left behind

Our default approach is to remove everything, including the wood, the brush, and all the debris. Of course, if you're interested in firewood, you can even save a little bit by requesting to keep the wood. Once all that's out of the way, then you get to decide whether you want the stump ground down right away, which is the most cost-effective way to approach it. We’ll fill the hole left with soil or chips on request.

How to Tell if a Tree Service Is Qualified

It doesn’t take much to start a tree service: a truck and a chainsaw. Wrong cuts can wound a tree and let decay in, and bad removals damage property. So it’s worth asking a few questions before you hire anyone:

  • Is there an ISA Certified Arborist? Certification requires years of hands-on tree care experience (or a combination of education and experience), passing a comprehensive exam, and ongoing continuing education to keep it.
  • Can I see a certificate of insurance? A good company will send one before the work starts.
  • What exactly is included? Cleanup, haul-away, and stump grinding or not.
  • When can you start? Get a realistic date, not a promise.
  • Can I see reviews or past work? Recent reviews from real customers tell you a lot.

At Trufast, Luke Smith is our ISA Certified Arborist. We’re happy to answer all of these before you decide.

“They are definitely Top Shelf. Professional, courteous, timely and the quality of their work is the best I've seen. Left my yard in fantastic condition. Had a tree removed and stump ground, can't even tell there was a tree there. If I ever require their service again won't hesitate to call them back. Highly recommend.”

College Town on the Prairie’s Edge

Bolivar has a few things going on that shape the tree work out there — geology, a long-standing university, and a town that grew on its own terms rather than as a Springfield suburb.

Where prairie meets the Ozarks

Bolivar sits close to where the Western Prairie gives way to the Ozark Plateau — Polk County was organized in 1835 right around that geological transition. Practically, that can mean different soil and root conditions from one property to the next: flatter, deeper-soil ground on one job and rockier Ozark hillside on the next, sometimes within the same neighborhood.

A university town

Southwest Baptist University has been based in Bolivar since 1879 and is one of the county seat’s largest employers today. College towns like this tend to build up older, established neighborhoods around the campus over more than a century — mature trees included, often needing a more careful hand than a newer subdivision planting.

A working county seat, not a bedroom community

Bolivar functions as its own regional hub — agriculture, healthcare, and higher education are the three legs the local economy stands on. That means the town grew organically over generations rather than being built out all at once as a Springfield suburb, so tree age and placement vary a lot more from block to block than in a newer development.

Why technique and timing both matter

How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.

What goes into an estimate

All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.

Questions

Tree service in Bolivar, answered.

How much does tree removal cost in Bolivar?
Every tree is different — size, species, location, and access all affect price. We say that pricing starts in the low hundreds and goes into the thousands, but we know that isn't very helpful. And this is exactly why we give an on-site estimate before any work starts.
Do you charge extra to come out to Bolivar?
Sometimes. Depending on our estimating schedule, an on-site estimate this far out can carry a small trip fee. When our estimator already has work nearby, there often isn't one. Either way, the office tells you on the call, before anything is booked.
Are you insured for jobs outside Springfield?
Yes — the same $1M general liability + $4M umbrella coverage and workers’ comp apply everywhere we work, Bolivar included. We’re happy to share certificates before work begins.
Do you trim hedges and shrubs, not just trees?
Yes — we handle hedge and shrub trimming alongside tree work, so you don’t need a separate crew for the rest of the yard.
