The Mulch Mistake We See Most
Mulch is good for a tree, until it's piled against the trunk. That mound, sometimes called a "mulch volcano," is one of the most common mistakes we see.
Roots are built to live in moist soil, but the trunk and the flare at its base are meant to stay above ground and dry out between rains. Mulch piled against the bark keeps it damp and cuts off the air it needs, and that opens the door to rot and cankers.
The pile causes a second problem too. A buried trunk starts sending out new roots, and the tree's existing roots grow up into the mulch as it breaks down. When they reach the edge of the mound, they turn, and some wrap around the trunk. Those are called girdling roots, and as they thicken they slowly squeeze the trunk and strangle the tree. Meanwhile, the deep mound makes a cozy home for voles, which chew the bark right off.
The fix is simple:
- Spread mulch 2–3 inches deep in a wide ring.
- Pull it back a few inches from the trunk, so the base of the tree, where it flares out, is visible.
If a tree has had mulch piled against it for years, our arborist can check for girdling roots.
“Trufast trimmed two of my trees in Willard for me. They came on time, did the job as promised for the promised price, and left the area in better shape than it was when they started!”
One of the Stops We Make Every Week
Trufast is based in Springfield, about twenty minutes south of Willard. Willard is one of the 17 southwest Missouri communities we cover, and it's a regular stop for our crews rather than a special trip — part of why scheduling out here doesn't run any slower than it does closer to Springfield.
Trufast has stayed owner-operated, start to finish, holding every job to the same standard. For the calls that need more than a trim, our ISA Certified Arborist is on staff to make that judgment.
“Great to deal with and did an awesome shaping of my trees.”

I was very impressed by the quality; they cleaned my yard better than it was before, and even cleaned my gutters. I am very thankful to have a quality tree service team I can trust. Thank you team!”
“Great job, and terrific cleanup. Definitely use them again.”
“Excellent work removing a large tree. Safely done, good clean up afterwards. Crew were very helpful and left us some cut wood for firepit. Appreciate their service, highly recommend.”
“Luke and his very nice crew were there when they said they would be, were very reasonable and did an excellent job! We highly recommend them and will use them for all future jobs. Thank you!”

Willard’s a different kind of place than the subdivisions closer to Springfield — more open ground, more working land — and that shapes the kind of tree work a property out there tends to need. A bit more about the area below.
Open ground north of Springfield
Willard sits about five miles north of I-44, in northwestern Greene County. There's still plenty of farmland around it, and a working limestone quarry, alongside a school district that keeps growing. Properties here tend to run larger with more tree lines, windbreaks, and pasture-edge trees than the more tightly-packed yards closer to Springfield.

Trail town
Willard has one of the main trailheads on the Frisco Highline Trail, a 35-mile rail-trail that follows the old Frisco railroad line between Springfield and Bolivar. Right across from the trailhead, a kiosk tells the story of the 1908 bank robbery, when two robbers made their getaway down the tracks on a railroad handcar. The old bank building is still standing. For long hikes in the woods, Little Sac Woods Conservation Area north of town has more than seven miles of hiking trails.
A small town holding its shape
Willard’s growing, but it’s held onto a small-town identity that’s harder to find closer to Springfield — much of it centers around the Willard R-2 school district, which serves more than 4,500 students across nine schools. That kind of steady, community-anchored growth has kept mature, older trees around which normally would get cleared for new construction.
Twenty minutes north
Willard is about 20 minutes from our Springfield shop, and falls into our main service area. We are grateful for our customers in the Willard area.
Why technique and timing both matter
How you trim a tree affects how well a tree grows over time. Improper trimming and broken branches left to rot can result in the untimely death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These can require climbing when we cannot access them with a bucket truck.
Clearing rotten or weak branches
Over time because of wind, storms, and branches dying, a tree develops a significant amount of dead wood. Dead branches are weaker and can create a safety threat. If you have dead branches in your trees, and especially if they are hanging (aka widow makers) we will take care of them safely.
