What a trim includes

Cutting for the tree's health, and for a more beautiful yard.

Trimming focuses on multiple goals

Trimming, which can be called pruning as well, serves several important purposes, not the least of which is it makes the tree more agreeable to look at. But trimming a tree should also help it to grow in a healthy way, alleviating it of deadwood and overgrowth, and helping it to focus its energy on growing the parts that are strong. Ultimately, our goal when trimming is to help your trees to grow healthier, look great, and hold up better in high winds. It should be noted that we do not use pruning sealer because this hinders the healing of the tree. In the end, it is our goal to serve you in the way you want to be served, related to the work we do on your property.

Trimming can damage property

As you can imagine, dropping heavy limbs and branches can cause a lot of collateral damage. When our crew approaches every job site, we take the time to discuss how we’re going to approach it to keep everybody safe and to protect your property. Every team is trained in the tools and techniques necessary to do just that.

Some jobs require a climber

When we can’t get a bucket truck close enough to trim a tree, we have to bring in the climber. Our climbers average more than 5 years of climbing experience each and have shown us that they have level heads and good decision-making. When trimming, we use SRT and DRT methodology instead of spiking the trees due to the long term aesthetic damage and the potential of exposing trees to disease. Climbers are trained and overseen by our ISA-certified arborist.

Tidied up on the same visit.

We always try to leave the property better than we found it and are meticulous about the way we clear out the limbs and debris. It is our hope that, upon review of the work we do, you are extremely pleased with how well we clean up after ourselves, and if you aren’t, we are happy to come back and make it right.

The cheaper estimate won’t always save you money.

A lower estimate is often missing more than insurance. To be sure, insurance is part of it, as an uninsured crew is a risk to the asset, which is your home. But it isn't the whole story. The conscientiousness of a company is built into its culture, whether we're talking about proper training, solid equipment, or a crew that plans a job instead of just winging it, or someone who actually answers the phone and gives you the confidence that it will get sorted out that you don't feel went right. Excellence isn't something that happens without intentionality.

It is our desire that we can create an experience for you that is both enjoyable and trustworthy from start to finish. We think that there are things that are more valuable than the money you spend on our services.

What trimming actually involves

Three things happen on a trimming job.

  • Pruning & Shaping Different tree species require different shaping and different pruning. Ideally, we start with the tree when it is relatively young, before the bad growth patterns become hardened in, but let's be honest, that isn't normally how it goes. Proper trimming brings out the best in a tree, both from a healthy growth and strength perspective and also the natural beauty.
  • SRT / DRT -- No Spikes Allowed Our climbers ascend using rope-based climbing methods - single-rope technique (SRT) and double-rope technique (DRT) - never spikes. Spiking a tree exposes the tree to potential disease injection and scars the trunk in a very noticeable way. Our climbers are trained in rope ascension techniques that allow them to avoid the damage of spikes when we can't get to it with a bucket.
  • Brush Removal Sometimes we have to remove multiple branches when we are trimming, and some of them can be extremely large, the size of a mature tree in some cases. We feel it goes without saying, but in case it's a question in your mind, cleanup is a default mode for us on a job. All we want you to see when we are done is the beauty of your trees growing out of the tranquility of your clean yard.
Why it matters

The wrong cut costs the tree years.

A tree can be trimmed every year or two to promote growth and retain its health — the earlier you start, the better, since trees often develop growth patterns on their own that can cause weaknesses later. How you trim a tree really matters to its success over time: improper trimming and storm-broken branches left untreated can result in the eventual death of the tree.

That's why pruning decisions on every job are based in the standards set by our ISA Certified Arborist and reinforced through crew training. We want to make sure that whoever is holding the saw that day is prepared to do a great job for you. “They were very professional. They made sure we were both on the same page on how to trim the trees before starting the service. They checked with us as they were completing the service to make additional changes when needed. After completing the tree trimming, they cleaned up everything, including random leaves and ground them up before leaving our house.”

Questions

Tree trimming, answered.

How much does tree trimming cost in the Springfield area?
Every tree is different — size, location, neglect level, and proximity to structures or power lines all affect price. We provide free on-site estimates before any work starts.
How often should a tree be trimmed?
A tree can be trimmed every year or two in order to promote growth and retain their health. The earlier you start, the better, as trees will often develop growth patterns on their own that could ultimately cause weaknesses later on. Mature trees offer shade, beauty, and value to a property. On the flip side, when a tree develops weaknesses, it can be hazardous to life and property.
What's the best time of year to trim trees?
For most trees, late fall through winter. With the leaves off, we can see the whole structure before anyone climbs, and the tree isn't busy pushing out new growth. Oaks are the exception to watch: we leave them alone in spring and early summer, when the beetles that spread oak wilt are drawn to fresh cuts. More on why we like trimming in winter.
Do you seal pruning cuts?
We trim in a way that promotes natural healing. Except in very specific situations, we don’t cover our cuts with pruning sealer — it prevents natural healing and ultimately exposes the tree to likely damage. If a situation warrants it, we’ll mention it and explain why.
Is trimming really necessary, or is it just cosmetic?
Both — it’s amazing how much a good trim can improve how a tree looks. Over time, deadwood and unhealthy branches accumulate in a tree, and they’re not just unattractive — they’re structural weaknesses more likely to fail in storms. Improper trimming, or worse, letting storm damage go untreated, can shorten a tree’s life through disease and rot exposure. Worth knowing: the center of a mature tree isn’t living tissue, and cuts need to protect it too.
Are your climbers insured?
Yes. Trufast carries a $5M liability tower plus workers’ compensation — coverage some lower-bid competitors skip. It’s one real cost difference, though not the only one; proper equipment, training, and the care taken on cleanup all factor into an estimate too. We know tree work is expensive, but doing it right is costly on our end as well — it’s one of the most dangerous jobs there is.
What happens to the branches you cut down — do you chip them?
Typically, if you want the rough, unpredictable mulch our chippers create, you can request a chip drop — though you may end up with more than just your own job’s chips, since it’s not unusual for us to drop what we’ve already cut from other jobs too. It’s a rough mulch, not the fine, dyed stuff you’d buy bagged, but still useful around beds and trees. The typical outcome is we haul it off for you and you don’t have to think about it.
Does trimming technique or tree age make a difference?
How you trim a tree really matters to the success of the tree over time. Improper trimming and storm-broken branches can result in the eventual death of the tree. Most often we are brought in to trim trees that are at least fifteen years old. These require climbing.
